Afghanistan: Balkh Hospital Handover Ceremony

Official handover ceremonies for the Regional Hospital Mazar-e-Sharif took place on 12 May 2012 in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of the Balkh province in Northern Afghanistan. Officials present at the ceremony were Dr. Suraya Dalil, the Afghan Minister of Public Health; Rüdiger König, the German Ambassador to Afghanistan; Atta Mohammad Noor, Governor of Balkh; and Japanese and Swedish council members

In the framework of Afghan-German Cooperation to contribute to the peaceful development of Afghanistan, the German Government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supported the reconstruction and upgrading of the hospital which was destroyed by fire in 2006. A budget of 13 million EURO was made available by the German Foreign Office for the construction of a 4 floor modern hospital building with a gross floor area of 16,000 m², providing space for patient care with a total capacity of 360 patient beds including 21 Intensive Care Unit (ICE) beds, 7 Operating Theatres, Imaging Unit, Laboratory, Accident and Emergency Unit.

乐动体育西班牙人The integration of a training and teaching facility for 260 students was supported by the Swedish Government with an additional 1 million EURO. Furthermore, the Japanese Government joined the project and will provide modern medical and non-medical equipment worth 8 million EURO. The hospital will serve as the main referral and teaching hospital for all of Northern Afghanistan.

Financial management of the project was handled by KfW Entwicklungsbank. EPOS was the lead partner for implementing the hospital reconstruction project. Additional consortium partners were Grontmij (Architecture and Engineering) and Mediconsult (Equipment Planning and Physical Assets Management).
